Chloe is named KRUUSE Veterinary Nurse of The Year

Chloe Darby has been named the KRUUSE Veterinary Nurse of The Year 2020.

The 22-year-old graduate from Telford, Shropshire studied BSc (Hons) Veterinary Nursing and Practice Management. She gained her award by producing the best Honours Research Project (HRP) within her cohort.

Chloe said: “My dissertation was about small animal veterinary clients’ experiences and expectations of veterinary nurse clinics. The purpose of my research project was to allow veterinary practices to develop and market their veterinary nurse clinics to meet the needs of their clients and thus, maximise attendance.” 

Having worked as an emergency on-call nurse during her studies, Chloe also gained knowledge and insight that contributed to her HRP through her placement year. She commented: “My placement year was at The Tern Veterinary Group where I worked as a Student Veterinary Nurse. I learnt all of the practical skills required to complete my Nursing Progress Log and pass my OSCE exams.

“The role of a veterinary nurse is very wide ranging. I would be with patients from admission to the practice in the morning through to discharging them at the end of the day. I would prepare patients for surgical procedures, run blood samples, take radiographs, monitor anaesthetics, run nurse clinics, nurse inpatients and much more!

“As well as practical skills, my placement year provided me with an understanding of the day to day running of a veterinary practice. This was useful in my final year modules, such as veterinary practice management.”

Having now completed her degree, Chloe is working at Vets4Pets in Essex as a Registered Veterinary Nurse.
